How to wash your face like an Esthetician:

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

Every skin care professional tells you to make sure to wash your face. However, very seldom do they explain how you should properly wash your face. So everyone out there, keep on reading because I am about ready to drop some cleansing truth bombs on you.

Ditch the makeup wipes!

If you haven’t already, get with the times and toss out your makeup wipes! Not only are they bad for the environment, but they do more damage to your face than good. Most make up wipes are not biodegradable and take forever to break down, which means the numerous wipes you have used every time you take off your makeup wipes are still sitting in landfills polluting our earth. If you flush your “flushable” make up wipes then most of the time they end up in our oceans and harming the adorable sea animals you see on those documentaries. They also contain ecological hazards because they are made up of non-biodegradable plastic fibers such as polyester, polypropylene, rayon, etc. Not to mention that more times than not they actually harm your skin from its chemicals such as phthalates, triclosan, and parabens, which are known to be endocrine disruptors, plus other ingredients like fragrances that can irritate the skin. So if you haven’t realized yet, please please please stop using makeup wipes - the earth, animals, and your face will thank you.

So you may be asking so how do I wipe off all my makeup? Which leads me to…

  1. Use the holy grail - double-cleanse system!

The double cleanse system is when you use an oil based cleanser that will break down and remove all of your stubborn makeup. Then you will go back in with a water based cleanser to fully cleanse your face and help remove any leftover makeup, dirt, excess oil, pollution, and dead skin cells. This is a much better alternative for the environment and for your skin. It eliminates the amount of waste and harsh chemicals being sent back into the environment. It also allows you to choose ethical, quality products that contain ingredients that will not irritate your skin and be effective. It will also prevent you from pulling and tugging your face like you would do if you used makeup wipes. This will help prevent any fine lines and wrinkles, yes you heard me correctly - no fine lines and wrinkles!!

So how do you properly wash your face like a professional? Well…

  1. First step - use the oil based cleanser or cleansing balm and wipe all over your face or use make up cotton rounds or reusable rounds (preferred) to wipe on your face. If you do use rounds, start with the eyes and put 2 saturated wipes underneath your eyes. Using another round, wipe down to remove mascara. Wipe outwards to remove eyeshadow. Wipe outwards to remove makeup and dirt from your eyebrows. Take the rounds the were underneath your eyes to remove the make from the bottom lashes and underneath the eyes. Take the oil based cleanser or balm and wipe the rest of the makeup off. If you are wearing lipstick, I recommend you use a round. Start from the outer corner, while holding your skin taut, and wipe inwards. This prevents the lipstick from getting all over your face. Do one side first and then do the other. Wash off cleanser. Remember to remove makeup in a downward motion, so you don’t push it up in your pores.

  2. Second step - Use your water based cleanser to wash your face again. Remember to wash in an UPWARDS motion to push the cleanser up in your pores to allow it to really work its magic. I like to do an upward, circular motion to really work the cleanser in and remove all the dirt. Wash your face clean, and viola you’re done!

I promise you, you won’t regret switching to the double cleanse system. If you have any questions or would like a more in depth explanation, comment below!

Also comment below, the results you found from switching from a makeup wipe to the double cleanse system. I would love to hear everyone’s feedback!
